The Gordon Camel Statue is an iconic part of Gordon’s School, its culture and its history. As custodians of this historic monument, we feel charged with responsibility for preserving this emotive memorial to General Gordon. During the summer of 2014, the statue underwent a full renovation to mend over 110 years’ worth of cold winters, corrosion and natural erosion which had weakened the monument over time. Thanks to the Camel Campaign Renovation Appeal, a total of £27,000 was raised in order for UK Bronze to carry out the renovation work. In October 2014, a grand unveiling took place with Guest of Honour, HRH The Earl of Wessex KG GCVO.
Almost everyone with a link to Gordon’s School as a student, teacher, parent, Governor, friend or member of staff, will have passed the Camel statue on a daily basis. It is an iconic and historical representation of the life of Major-General Gordon of whom without, the school would not exist as it does today. We hope you will share the school’s desire to ensure our statue remains a fitting tribute to General Gordon as well as the cultural centrepiece of our school.
