Key Stage 4 representatives from all Houses got the opportunity this week to enter the “KS4 Inter-House Debate Competition”. Pupils began the week by taking part in a workshop where they learned the importance of creating a strong argument, delivered effectively - debating is not about compromise! Pupils delivered two minute speeches on the topic of making childhood vaccinations compulsory, before heading into a challenging question and answer session with our experienced Key Stage 5 Debate team (Nonyem Ambrose, Toyomo Bolusire, James Kennett, Sophie Chan, Cerys Carson and Matt Winsper). 

 

After an incredibly rigourous selection process, China, Kensington, Sandringham and Buckingham made it through to the next round of the competition. Two semi-final debates ensued, once again judged by the Key Stage 5 team. Houses were pitted against each other in a tough battle with some even tougher questions until the winners were announced: Sandringham and Buckingham.

 

With Miles Hanney and Alan Mackenzie, representing Buckingham and Adam Grainger and Quentin Evason representing Sandringham, the motion was announced: ‘The television licence fee should be abolished’ and pupils were given just 24 hours to prepare for the final debate. Here the teams argued against each other and responded to a relentless barrage of questions from the judges, including stiff interrogation from the audience.

 

It took a considerable amount of time before the judges were able to come to a decision, but it was decided that, whilst Sandringham had excellent style, Buckingham had greater substance. 

 

Buckingham House, therefore, is declared the winner of the Key Stage 4 Inter-House Debate Competition.
